Entry Door Style: Wooden Doors, Steel Doors and Fiberglass Doors
When looking for the right door you’ll have to make an important choice with regards to the most appropriate entry door material. You have the choice of three styles: wooden doors, steel doors and fiberglass doors. Each style of entry door has unique characteristics yet all of them perform the same function. Entry door styles are chosen primarily for aesthetic appeal, some people prefer fiberglass doors while prefer a steel door. Here is a brief explanation of each entry door style.
Wooden Door
Wooden doors have the authentic natural look but are expensive and high maintenance. A wooden door is usually made with a thin piece of plywood or laminate on either side with a thicker piece of hardboard backer behind it. When real wood is exposed to cold natural elements there are considerable longevity problems. With the expansion and contraction caused by changes in temperature wooden doors can bend, warp and absorb moisture. As a result they will need to be refinished a few times down the road. The expensive nature and high maintenance characteristics have caused the popularity of wooden doors to drop. And with the introduction of fiberglass doors that imitate the texture of wood, authentic wooden doors are becoming even more rare.
Fiberglass Door
Fiberglass is a fairly new material when it comes to entry doors. It’s durable, can resist dents/scratches and is very low maintenance. What makes fiberglass doors so popular is their ability imitate the wood grain look. (This particular element has led to the steady decline of wooden doors on the market). A benefit to having fiberglass doors is that they don’t require a protective finish.
Fiberglass that is left unfinished can survive years without mold, deterioration or rust.
Masonite Entry Door
Fiberglass Textured doors offer the look of real wood that is easily stainable with low maintenance and extreme durability.
You can choose from natural wood-grain texture, smooth, oak texture or high-definition steel profile.

Steel Door
When it comes down to buying a nice looking inexpensive entry door then steel is the way to go. There is a very wide range of steel doors to choose from, they vary immensely when it comes to quality so it’s best to do your research. The most important thing to note about choosing the right steel door is the gauge. The higher the number, the thinner the steel. Higher gauge steel like the 24 is an example of a very inexpensive door. A lower 22 gauge is the common steel thickness used for residential homes. Anything lower is primarily used for commercial and security purposes. The great advantage to steel doors is the wide variety of colours to choose from. Since steel doors are the most inexpensive choice manufacturers offer a larger range of colour and style.
